I know I haven't posted lately about my favorite idiots. It's hard when I'm not in the right market and I refuse to pay for MLBtv.
In the meantime, I use Bahston Red Sawx Nahshin for my source of all things Sox.

Restarting
I used to have another blog. I don't know how many of my current readers were readers of the other one, but it would be interesting to see if I get linked for the same reasons.
That one was Saoirse na hOige (Freedom of Youth) at saoirse.oige.net. That site no longer exists, and the domain has been eaten up by one of those fuckwads known as domain resellers. I don't particularly feel like paying them a hundred bucks to get my domain back.
Which is too bad, cause I'd love to have a photoblog over there.
I find it interesting to think about the entries I had over there vs what I write over here. This is a lot more personal, a lot less political. I've grown up a bit in the last couple of years, settled down, and I'm starting to appreciate the wisdom of never staying the same.
Many people I know tout change. They go on and on about how wonderful it is to never stay the same, but in the process, they remain the same people in the same situations. The only thing that changes is whether or not they are following this cause or that cause. They never really grow up. Constantly struggling for the next slogan, the next job, the next meal. Although many of them are older than I am, they act as if they're still in high school or college. Expecting certain things to be taken care of for them. Expecting a certain level of childishness to be allowed. Occasionally I stop talking to one of these people for a while, only to come back later and find while I have grown up, matured, taken responsibility, they have simply stagnated.
Here I am, trying to break out of the chains that have held me - poverty, political blindness, health problems and concerns, and having moved out of my parent's house when I was 19. There they are, complaining about the same things - Bushitler, the lack of morals in our world, the war, how they hate their well-paying jobs, members of the other political party, their teachers not being political enough, and worst of all, bitching about their families.
There is no comparison, and those who stand there, in Union Square, in Washington Square, in Times Square, in Central Park, yelling and waving signs, are only making fools of themselves while they hinder the rest of us in our journey through life.

Shootout
Apparantly there was a shootout near my apartment this evening. I didn't know about it until now.
Things like this NEVER happen around here. Two bystanders were injured.
My company has two landlords on that block. I hope there were no injuries amongst their tenants.
Oh, and they killed the suspect. He deserved it. Ass.

Firefox has gone belly-up on me.
If anyone is willing to help attempt to fix it, I'd be very grateful.
This is a laptop, so I can easily bring it somewhere for someone to play with. Manhattan only though.
Bah. I know I could fix it myself, I'm just too lazy to do so.

Abortion Rights
Supreme Court to Review Abortion Law
This is an issue that's been going around the courts for a while now. New Hampshire wants to institute parental notification for women under 18 seeking abortions.
I've worked at various jobs involving teenagers who have issues. The idea that a clinic would have to inform parents who probably have something to do with why the girl is pregnant in the first place disgusts me.
It goes so far beyond any emotion I have words for.

Johnny Depp may have considered buying the house I grew up in.
Yes, I know most of the people quoted in that article. Hopkinton is a TINY town people. Something like 2500 people.
Mary Cowan was my next-door-neighbor when I was a kid. She's also the one who sold my house originally, and has it on the market now. Hopefully it stays on just long enough for me to buy it.

The Long, Hot, Memorable Days of Summer
This weekend reminds me of high school. The weather, the sun, the sounds of kids playing in the park across the street...
I went to a small high school. One with only 65 kids 9-12 and 160ish kids K-12. We all knew each other, and if one was ostracized at any point, that person would probably remain on the outside until either graduation or transfer happened. The other side of that coin was that once people decided they liked you, you were set for the rest of your teenage years.
I was the first, my sister was the second. Amazing differences within the same family produced the outgoing, company-loving, wanting-to-be-liked-by-everybody me and the shy, not-sure-how-to-make-friends little sister.
Oddly enough, she was the one with all the friends. Or maybe not so oddly. But I'm getting off-track here. And using way too many hyphens.
My favorite memory from HS was a simple one (aren't they all?). A Tradition.
I drove to school every day. More accurately, I carpooled with a couple other people. A girl from one town over, myself, my sister (once she started going to the school) and another girl from the city nearby. Ok, not so much a city as a large town. But we called it the city. So it was.
Getting back to the point. Yes. Ok. So we carpooled. And this was NH, so it was Cold And Wet all winter and most of the spring. So when there was a warm day, when the dirt road the school was on wasn't muddy and filled with potholes (or even if it was, we'd ignore it) we'd pop a cassette in the player (yes, I'm old, get over it) and fast-forward to the right song.
When it came blaring out of the speakers, windows down, flying over the bumps, hills, potholes, and whathaveyou of an old dirt road in Middle-of-Nowhere, NH, we felt invincible. Like anything could happen. We were emerging from our cocoons to enjoy the sun, the breeze, the smells and sounds of the world coming alive.
Oh, what was the song? Sweet Home Alabama. Perfect.

Weekend
This is going to be an interesting weekend.
Some good friends of mine (the ones with the two girls I babysit) are moving to CT on June 3rd. This means I only get to see them occasionally.
I need to buy the youngest her birthday present. No idea what to get her. Probably end up picking up a Maurice Sendak book for when she's older. Pair it with one of the stuffed monsters from Where The Wild Things Are.
My mom is coming down to the city for the weekend. It's also my uncle's birthday, so we'll be celebrating that. Need to get him a present/card.
Need to pay bills. Have no money. Being poor sucks.
Won't hear from CUNY for another month. Waiting sucks.
I'm trying to finish up a video game (Kingdom Hearts) which has me in its clutches.
AND...
The most major event of the weekend...THE SOX PLAY THE YANKEES!
GO SOX!
KICK THEIR ASSES!
YANKEES SUCK!
I love you all and I love the Passionfruit.
(If you know what that means, email me. We may have a lot in common. If you don't, you won't get it. Inside joke.)

Idol Finale
I'm over at Idol Tongues discussing the finale of AI.
It's been a long, crazy season.
Lots of Paula Crack Trips, bad Ford commercials, idiotic group songs, and some really shitty singing.
Oh, and a couple people who should be stars.
------------
I was going to go to the Archives Listening Project down on Essex St tonight. Unfortunatly, certain events which shall remain nameless have kept me stuck to my bed in growling pain. I apologize to those who expected me there, and hope they will have fun.
UPDATE: Awful show, as expected. One good bit where Bo sang with Lynyrd Skynyrd (damn that was amazing). Carrie won. We all wish Bo had won, but we all know that he'll get signed to an amazing rock contract.

The whole thing is a scam.
They take the request and forward it to a local RE agent.

Finally...
So. Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith
Decent movie. Of course I went in not expecting much, and my expectations were met. Great graphics, great hell planet, sucky acting from Natalie Portman, and Ewan McGregor was underused.
Check, check, check, and check.
Some of the acting was really bad. I mean really bad. There were scenes that had me hiding my face in my hands, trying not to laugh.
The audience in my theater was terrible. I think we were all just trying to avoid the embarrassment of reacting to the movie. A friend of mine went to see it at a different theater later that night, and said their audience was making fun of the film. Comments were made, laughter was had...
Maybe I should see it again, this time at a different theater with a different audience.
Anyone want to join me for the purposes of making fun of bad acting and gay droids?

I admit it, there's no liberal bias
Newsweek says Koran desecration report is wrong
Newsweek magazine said on Sunday it erred in a May 9 report that U.S. interrogators desecrated the Koran at Guantanamo Bay, and apologized to the victims of deadly Muslim protests sparked by the article.
I can't even say how pissed off I am about this.
You're right. There's no liberal bias. There's just stupidity and bad reporting that gets people killed.
Editor Mark Whitaker said the magazine inaccurately reported that U.S. military investigators had confirmed that personnel at the detention facility in Cuba had flushed the Muslim holy book down the toilet.
But they can't even say "we screwed up", they just say they "inaccurately reported".
On Sunday, Afghan Muslim clerics threatened to call for a holy war against the United States."We regret that we got any part of our story wrong, and extend our sympathies to victims of the violence and to the U.S. soldiers caught in its midst," Whitaker wrote in the magazine's latest issue, due to appear on U.S. newsstands on Monday.
16 people were killed and 100 injured in the resulting riots, the Islamic world was ready to issue a holy war, and they REGRET it?
What happened to researching BEFORE you release information?

Hope is not a four letter word
Sissy, on May 9th, said the following
Hope is not a strategy, but we hope the escalating violence represents not enemy strength but the death throes of a weakened enemy that recognizes it is cornered. We are encouraged by reports that "U.S. and Iraqi officials have claimed some big victories against the insurgency in recent days, even as deadly attacks have continued"
She then goes on to quote a WSJ article, for which registration is required.
It came to mind this afternoon as I opened up FoxNews.com, and had another disturbing headline shrieking at me. This one, however, sparked something in my head. I went back and read the whole article from Sissy. In the course of reading, the thought materialized completely, and you know what? Sissy is right, to some degree. The constant execution-style murders, the frantic bombings to get attention, they aren't strategizing anymore. They're simply attacking.
Note who most of the targets are. Iraqis. Very few American or international soldiers have been killed in the past weeks, compared to the number of Iraqi citizens who have been victims of opportunity. This has the added effect of pissing off the Iraqis, who are now responsible for policing themselves.
They'll be pushed just a bit further, then the country will snap, and the terrorists are dead.
Hope is a wonderful thing.
UPDATE: Went over to Insta and came across a curious piece of writing from Strategypage on Operation Matador.
The foreign terrorists are, to put it mildly, disliked even in this part of Iraq. Although the local smugglers have been making some money working for the terrorists, everyone knows that these wild eyed foreigners mean only death for Iraqis. Either from their suicide bombs, or the battles between them and American and Iraqi troops, the terrorists are considered bad news and best avoided. In fact, the marines received a friendly reception in many villages, the people relieved to see someone who could run off the terrorists and restore order. Iraqi police, troops and border guards have come in behind the marine operation, as the Iraqi government has not had any presence in this area since early 2003, and not much before that. . . .An increasing number of Sunni Arab leaders have distanced themselves from the terrorists. Nearly five hundred Iraqis have been killed by terrorist attacks so far this month, and few Iraqi Sunnis can put a positive spin on this any more. . . . While Sunni Arab propaganda, especially outside Iraq, blames all this on "the American occupation," inside Iraq the mayhem is blamed on foreign fanatics, particularly from Saudi Arabia. Iraq and Saudi Arabia have never had a cozy relationship, and that long standing tension has been pumped up because of all those terror attacks carried out by Saudi Arabian Islamic radicals.
I used the edited bit from Insta, as he cut down the overwhelming text to a managable and descriptive couple of paragraphs.
But the whole thing, going back for weeks, is facinating. Talks about how the QUALITY of the suicide bombers has gone down, most of the bombs are activated by remote and are with people who probably did not sign up to die, or the mentally disabled.
Truly amazing stuff. I'm starting to have a lot more faith in our operations over there now.

But Manhattan IS an Island
So we have not only a wall collapsing up on the Henry Hudson Parkway, cutting off the west side from Westchester and The Bronx, but also a fire on the NJTransit train bridge, and just today a truck stalled on the Brooklyn Bridge, causing them to evacuate and close down said bridge.
If anything were to seriously happen to the bridges and tunnels in this city, Manhattan would be screwed.
Completely screwed.
This, for obvious reasons, bothers the hell out of me. I have to wonder if the OEM (Office of Emergency Management) has any sorts of plans for how to evacuate this city in that circumstance.
I doubt it. I think the NYC government has done some very good things in the recent past, but that they haven't quite figured out how to manage a city of 9-12 million people in case of another emergency. Good examples of this are not only 9/11, but also the blackout. The city had very little to do with the reaction of its citizens. For the most part, it was the individuals who reacted with calm and intelligence, showing the world that we are not who we were in 1977.
So now I wonder what will happen the next time there's a city-wide disaster.

But he is still my homepage. Mostly because I can't use FireFox to navigate my office server (OLE doesn't like FireFox) and partially because it's easy to just click open and skim.
However, came across this today, and was amazed. I think that's the sharpest tone I've ever encountered from him.

School Troubles
I am applying to college.
This has now been going on for a few months.
I left college, for various reasons, back in 2001. Proceeded to move down here, establish myself, and now I've decided that a degree in education is a good idea.
Now I'm having to yell at people.
CollegeBoard.org has fucked up bigtime. They had all sorts of issues with their system that meant my scores didn't get out. Now they're telling me it's fixed, but it'll take 3-5 WEEKS to get my scores to CUNY.
Can I scream now?
So I've contacted CUNY, and am waiting for a response from them as to whether or not it will screw up my chances for getting in.
If anyone has connections to CUNY admissions, and would be willing to push a response, I'd be very appreciative.
Hell, I had a 1300 on my SAT's, my GPA was fairly good, you'd think I could just get a preliminary acceptance pending receipt of scores.
I know. I know. It doesn't work that way.
I really am going to scream. I swear.

Writing Issues
Something I've noticed lately as I wander around the blogosphere, reading and commenting on various sites is just how varied the writing styles are. You have, on one end, Sissy Willis, who writes these long, beautiful essays punctuated with stunning photos. Another style is Laurence Simon, who's humor and "Ask The Cats" section is the place to go for insightful commentary on Israel and the UN. Or get a good laugh out of one of his other "Is Full Of Crap" sites.
Continuing on my travels, I come across Michele Catalano, who tends to address some of the same conflicts I end up having with myself. She also runs Idol Tongues, a guilty pleasure blog for intelligent fans of American Idol. She is also a member of the Darkside, but that's a whole other story.
Karol is someone I found recently, but I've enjoyed the discussions I've had on her site and look forward to being able to meet her. We apparantly have a mutual aquaintance, which was discovered a few days ago.
What is the point to all of this?
I'm questioning my writing skills. I'm not sure what I have is up to the caliber I expect from myself and from those I read. And those who read me most likely are feeling that there should be something more to this site. Something insightful, something more than just pissing away time on a website.
I'm going to probably explore this extensively over the next week or so, mostly out of public view. I'll do my best to start writing more interesting bits.
Off I go now, looking for intellectual integrity.

Happy Mother's Day
Yet again, Mother's Day has crept up on us.
Every year I agonize over what to get.
I usually end up sending an E-card. One that makes me laugh.
Although last year, I sent flowers...I think...
I can never remember.
But every year, I call her (if she's at home, and not in the City with me) and wish her a Happy Mother's Day.
Every year, we have a long conversation about random things.
Wait, we do that almost every day.
I guess the card is what makes it different.
Anyway, Happy Mother's Day to all those mothers out there. Enjoy.

So the Labour Party won in Britain. Looks like they're going to be bringing in Gordan Brown to replace Blair though. I think more research is in order. Is a child in a box the same thing as a cat-in-a-box?
I'm babysitting at the moment. Only reason I was up so hellishly early this morning, managing to be drunk and hung over at the same time. Quite the accomplishment.
One of the children is in the baby swing. She is a baby. This makes sense. She is enjoying herself.
The other one is sitting curled up in a box. This is odd.
Especially to my poor damaged brain.
I will have just enough time to recover before the cinco de mayo celebration tonight.
LATER: I have a photo of the box, sans child. I shall post it later.
Photos of real people will probably not go up on this site without heavy editing or written permission.

Another Baseball Post
If you don't like baseball, ignore this one too.
The Sox need to win another couple games. This isn't an option. I want to see us more than 3.5 up from the Yankees in the standings. I don't mind that we're 4 down, but it would be very nice if we could close that gap.
But in order to do that, our bullpen needs to sharpen up. Foulke needs to not be pitching every game. Close out with Timlin occasionally. Get Wells off the DL. Get Schilling healthy and able to pitch the kind of game he's pitched in the past. No more of these 4 or 5 inning games for our starters.
Oh, and Ortiz and Ramirez need to start earning their money. Too many strikeouts. Not enough slugging.
