Warning, this is going to disturb you
It probably should have been upsetting, seeing actual blood vessels sticking out from underneath my ripped toenail earlier.
It wasn't.

Your call is important to us, please stay on the line and someone will be with you shortly.
I've been wandering around the city today. Got The Boy a new pair of jeans, which he desperately needed, and had some decent cheap sushi at Go Sushi in the West Village.
Then he went off with his best friend to PS1 to check out girls and maybe enjoy the music, and I came home.
I'm a bit distracted today. Picked up Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire yesterday, been reading it through. I'd read the first three, but not 4 or 5, so I figured I'd catch up.
Anyway, I get home, unlock door #1, check mail, unlock door #2 (brownstone...means I have good security) and started up the stairs to my second floor apartment.
Well, I tried. My foot didn't make it, and it smashed into the step.
Well, smashed is the wrong word. Let's just say I'm laying in bed, typing this on my laptop, with my foot elevated on pillows so as to minimize the blood loss. I was left with about two-thirds of my toenail. Not counting the white bit at the end.
Um...ow? Not so much fun. I'm going to feed myself water and sugar to build my blood levels back up and read Harry Potter. Maybe take something for the pounding that is my foot.
Yeah, ow. I'm a moron.

Vanishing act
Sorry I haven't been around today, I was in Central Park playing with two of the cutest girls I've ever known.
C is 4.5, will be 5 in November. Her sister, S, is 14 months.
C saw Willy Wonka and loved it.
Guess my analysis that it's not good for kids is wrong...
Learn something new every day.
(No, I'm not discussing the Manny trade. I refuse to admit that it could happen. When it does happen, I'll have a nice big blowup about it.)
So now I'm sweaty, dirty, tired, and...well, no longer hungry or thirsty, but definitely ready to collapse.
All in all, a great day.

"Willy Wonka, WIlly Wonka..."
One word...
Disturbing.
Below the fold due to spoilers...
Wonderful movie. Beautiful reference to Edward Scissorhands, another one to Nightmare Before Christmas, and probably a couple others I missed.
Depp was truly bizzare, and a perfect choice. Gene Wilder is still a better Wonka, but Depp adds a kind of twisted logic that Wilder never had.
Burton is amazing. Pure genius.
There were a few complaints I had, one being that the ending had nothing to do with the book, another being that Christopher Lee's character, Willy's father, is a creature made especially for this movie. They have him in the middle of a snow-covered hill, in the middle of nowhere, in a London townhouse. I don't get it.
The whole thing was too much of a Journey and not enough of an Adventure.
But I still loved it.
*sigh*
The Oompa Loompas really got me too. The scenes in LoompaLand were beautifully rendered, looks exactly as I pictured.
And the Glass Elevator was actually a CUBE! Not a weird thingy with a pointed top!
My recommendation, if you read all this way and haven't seen it yet, is to go see it. Now.
Just make sure there aren't any children in the audience. This is not for those who are scared or disturbed easily.

Sox notes
Two things.
1) Clement released from hospital
And we all breathe a sigh of relief. Not even a concussion.
I still worry about his mental health, and, by extention, the health of the team.
2)FUCKING WAKEFIELD!!!!
That is all. You may return to your regularly scheduled chaos now.

Manny wants out
This isn't news, but my favorite quote from this story comes from Francona:
``When was this, when he was pissing in the scoreboard?'' bemused Sox manager Terry Francona said yesterday when informed of a Sports Illustrated report that Ramirez has (again) asked to be traded. ``I'm at a loss on that one. You guys can have fun with that one because I know it'll have some legs for a couple of days. So go ahead and knock yourselves out.''
The Sox thrive on the chaos that is Fenway. They're unkempt, riled up, and always saying something stupid. It's one of the reasons I love them. They are representative of America right now.

Clement update
No new information on Clement, unfortunately. I don't think we'll hear anything until this afternoon or evening.
In the meantime, I've been involved in conversations in a couple of different threads. Expressing pretty much the same emotion, the same understanding, and the same willingness to focus on not only his health, but the health of the entire team as a result.
TC over at Darkside is severely misunderstanding this.
Yanksfan vs Soxfan is a good example of how most Boston fans are reacting right now.
We want him to be ok. We want him to be healthy. We want him to not be afraid of the ball.
We want this for the entire team. When your pitcher gets banged around like that, it affects the team. This is a man you work with every day, spend more time with than probably anyone except your family, and probably more time during the season, pre-season and post-season. It is a huge concern, and can destroy a team.
That one moment can make or break this team. Not just for this season, but for the next few seasons. It can have major repercussions over the second half of this decade.
And who knows what those players will take to other teams?
Mental health is not something to be sneezed at. It's critical, especially in a game that relies on their egos and lack of fear.
I don't want to see many careers shattered because of a ball to the head.
Clear enough for you, TC?
Now back the fuck off. You don't know me, you don't know how I'm reacting, and I think the fact that I posted the articles before anyone else in the blogosphere says a HELL of a lot.

Idiot Third Base Coach
Seriously. The fucking 3rd base coach almost blew it for us.
Waving Olreud home on THAT?!
Thank god the boys seem to be coming back...
Though this may be too soon to speak. Bottom of the 9th, no outs.
UPDATE: Yeah, spoke too soon.
Francona really needed to pull Schilling out before the 10th. PUT TIMLIN IN YOU FUCKING IDIOT!
I scream in my blog because I can't scream at the TV. No NESN here.
MORE: Phew. That was painful. Can't Francona see what was going on there? Schilling can't go more than 15, maybe 20 pitches right now. No endurance. What does the fucking manager do? Leaves him in for two innings, 32 pitches.
Bah. At least it's over, and the Idiots In Red won.

why does everything have to change
Because change is a good thing.
Because if life didn't change, we'd be bored.
Because it's the bumps in life that keep us on our toes and our brains limber.
Because if life didn't change, what would we do with ourselves?
Because change is the spice of life.
Because even though change sucks sometimes, in the end it always gives us opportunities.
Because when life changes, it gives you the chance to become a better person.
Learn to love change, and it will love you back.

I got a pledge from Caryn!
She's blogging for the American Cancer Society. I considered blogging for them, but am somewhat upset that they don't have a section for the families who survive cancer victims. Or if they do, it's not very visible.
I still respect the hell out of anyone who blogs for cancer research/associations.
I considered changing my charity to SHADE, since it would combine my love of baseball and cancer prevention, but I can't change it at this point.
Thank you, Caryn!

How can anyone think a welfare state is a good idea? If you are able to work and don't, you don't eat, and can't afford somewhere to live. Simple.
If you are working, and still unable to make ends meet, then government assistance, and extra education to increase your skills is a good idea.
If you are unable to work, and have no family and no money, then government assistance is necessary.
If you are able to work, but can't find a job, unemployment benefits and more education/training is a good idea.
Get people off their asses and you'll reduce violence, drug abuse, and the need for either a welfare state or projects.
Until then, don't come crying to me that you only get enough money from the government for one BMW. I've worked my ass off to get where I am, and I didn't need any help from the government.

NASA admits pulling a 'Scotty' with Mars Rovers By Mark MotzWith the twin Mars rovers approaching or surpassing their 200th SOL on Mars, NASA engineers reveal a somewhat geekish secret.
NASA Mars rover design engineer Joe Melko, suppressing a mischevious smile, explains
"Well, we've been telling the media that the twin Mars rovers were designed to last a hundred days, and that every day after that is an added unexpected bonus, but now that we've gone beyond the 200th day mark with Spirit, I think it's time we offer a more accurate explanation."
Melko took a stack of Star Trek photos from his desk, picking one showing the original Star Trek character Mister Scott talking to a younger actor
"Remember this episode? Mister Scott is explaining to the young engineer how to come across as a miracle worker. He says something like: 'Tell the captain it will take you 3 hours to fix the problem, lad, when you know it will only take about 1. That way, when you leisurely fix it in 2, you'll still come across as a miracle worker!'"
Melko took out a pair of wax Spock ears and put them on, giving the 'live long and prosper' symbol with his right hand
"Err...well, we did the same thing. We knew the twin rovers might even last a year on Mars, so we pulled a Scotty, so we'd look like heroes. We got the idea at a Star Trek convention in Orlando a few years back."
If nothing else, America's brilliant NASA engineers have once again illustrated their almost superhumanlike genius, -along with more than a trifle of geekishness-, but genius nonetheless.

My God, they have a military?!
The government has hardened its claims over a portion of the Far North after Canada's defence minister quietly set foot this week on a tiny Arctic island that has become the object of an ownership dispute with Denmark.Bill Graham took the extraordinary steps onto Hans Island on Wednesday in a symbolic move that helps to stake Canada's claim to the area when and if the dispute comes to a head. Military personnel landed on the island a week earlier, planted a Canadian flag and built an Inuit stone marker known as an inukshuk.

Why is it that when something big, like a bomb scare in Penn Station, happens, the "officials" feel the need to protect us "little people" by NOT RELEASING ANY INFORMATION!!!!!

Penn Station Evacuation
Why did I just get a call from a friend saying "Penn Station is being evacuated, find out why" but there's nothing in the news or on Command Post?
Supposedly the people leaving had been told to "run".
UPDATE: There's really not all that much information being leaked...The only station that has anything is 1010 WINS, and that's because they have transportation info. They said something about a police investigation at Penn, with the A, C, E, 1, 2, and 3 lines closed down at 34th St and Amtrack/LIRR/NJTransit not leaving the station.
MORE: Apparantly streets are shut down from 48th-50th streets, Bway-8th Avenue, along with the 1 line. No word as to why, or if it's related to the Penn shutdown.
EVEN MORE: According to my source, the M102 is diverting from 3rd Avenue to 1st Avenue from 42nd St-57th St. (This might be diverting because of a street fair, I'll know more in a moment.)
Yup. It's a street fair.
NEXT: Finally, at 1:40am, a good hour after all this started, MTA.info has a service alert. Prior to this, 1010WINS was the *only* source for any info, and that was only traffic. Slowly but surely this is leaking out.
EXTRA: 50th St is reopened. I think it was unrelated.
1:51pm: Investigation completed, but still no word as to what it was. I don't know if we'll ever know. How annoying.

Bomb Scare Prompts New York Station Evacuation Police Investigate 'Suspicious Package' at New York's Penn Station By RICHARD ESPOSITONEW YORK, July 24, 2005 — A "suspicious package" in New York's Penn Station triggered at least a partial evacuation today while bomb squad technicians investigated, city police officials said.
The scare was at least the third such incident of the day.
Within about a half-hour, people began returning to the station, according to a television crew from WABC-TV in New York, and police and emergency officials declared the incident over.
A preliminary report indicated a person may have tossed the suspicious package at an Amtrak clerk, shouted "bomb" and fled, according to other city emergency personnel. Police could not initially confirm that report.
Nerve Center
Penn Station is the terminus for the Washington-to-New York corridor of Amtrak, the Long Island Railroad, New Jersey Transit, and numerous New York City subway lines. PATH subway trains between New York and New Jersey also are in the vicinity.
New York and New Jersey have been on heightened alert for danger to transit — not only because of the London attacks but because of recent, unconfirmed information from a credible source that the Amtrak line between Washington and New York could be the target of an attack.
Terrorists' desire to target transit long has been known. But the recent information was specific enough for the FBI to send warnings to rail officials.
However, officials stressed the information, while specific, was unconfirmable, so the warnings were made as a precaution only.
Other Scares
In the wake of the most recent London attacks, public terrorism awareness has again been heightened. Officials in New York and other states with large mass-transit systems report an increase in reporting of suspicious packages and devices, ABC News has learned.
At the time of the Penn Station scare, the New York bomb squad had responded to at least two earlier reports earlier in the day, one reportedly near the bus terminal at 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue, possibly aboard a Greyhound bus, and another at 51st Street and Broadway.
Officials have sought the increased public awareness. And even when reports turn out false, they almost always have been from well-meaning citizens.
That's the only news outlet talking about it.

Is the NYTimes bullshitting us again?
Referring to the American rebuilding program, Mr. Salih said in prepared remarks that its "large-scale, capital-intensive" focus had been inevitable because of the crumbling infrastructure inherited from Saddam Hussein's government. But he added, "It is now clear that that these megaprojects, though essential, have not succeeded in providing quickly enough for Iraqis' basic needs like electricity, water and sanitation."
I'm not sure what to make of this. On the one hand, it seems like Salih is simply stating the obvious and the Times is taking it to further their own anti-war objective.
On the other...Um...There doesn't seem to be an other hand. The Times really does seem to be twisting his remarks.
I guess they are bullshitting us.

The world is not flat...It's dangerous.
Via Insta
TIM WU IN SLATE:The end of June marked the deadline for independent Chinese bloggers to register with the government. That requirement is another sign, along with Microsoft's recent admission that its Chinese blog site would block titles like "freedom" and "democracy," of the country's efforts to control the Internet. . . .China's long-term vision is clear: an Internet that feels free and acts as an engine of economic progress yet in no way threatens the Communist Party's monopoly on power. With every passing day the Chinese Internet reflects that vision more closely. It portends a future for the Web that we're only beginning to understand—one in which powerful countries refashion the global network to suit themselves.
The ramifications go well beyond China, and the complicity of American companies like Microsoft and Cisco is disgraceful.
I'm in the middle of THE WORLD IS FLAT and this has severe implications for what Friedman has written. He hasn't brought up anything regarding this, and although I'm not one to read his columns, I might start just to see if he deals with this problem.

Surf the web on your phone!
New .mobi Web suffix for phones
This is so very cool. It means that sites like Instapundit and IFOC will be able to run cell phone-compatible sites with little effort. Just have a little applet which propigates material from the main site to a .mobi site, and there ya go!
I wonder what this means for emergency situations. How much easier will it be to get information widely distributed during a crisis? I'm sure Tom Friedman will have some concern about terrorists being able to get more pages up and be able to disseminate information easier, but it is more of an advantage to the common citizen than it is to terrorists. There are many more of us than there are of them, and a flash mob can be created easily using this new method to show up and keep a terrorist in one place till police get there, or to protest a company funding known terrorist groups, or even just to get the information out there in case of attack.
I think this is a really good thing. Can you tell?

Moonbat insanity
The far leftists really are insane. They don't understand that the housing projects keep people in poverty instead of lifting them out. That they are one of the reasons NYC is having problems. The only way this city can become a wonderful place to live is if the landlords and owners create affordable housing in the private sector and make usre those who work are able to hae a place to live. It is those who live on the public dime, those who are able to work and *choose* not to who ruin it for the rest of us.
When a person decides to add to the culture and economy of the world, they become a true member of society. When they make the declaration "society should support me," they lose out on the chance to join the human race.
By human race I don't mean the collection of creatures that share 99.9% of a set of genes. I mean a group of the species homo sapiens sapiens who make the concious decision to create a better world. When those people are pushing their boundries, challenging themselves and the world around them to rise above the standard, then they become a member of the human race, and we welcome them into the fold.
Alors.
I happened to have a conversation with two moonbats and a potential member of the human race on Saturday night in Union Square. The one man was standing, listening to us discussing and arguing about poverty, gentrification, the government, and other moonbattery. I was speaking about how I am working to ensure that Harlem would become a magnet for intelligent professionals who wanted to see the city become unified and the need for the projects disappear. That the people who live in the projects are mostly uninterested in bettering themselves.
Because I am white, the moonbats, one in particular who was wearing a dirty, torn, white t-shirt with magic-marker slogans written all over it and anti-Bush pins scattered amongst the slogans, felt it necessary to inform me that I am a yuppie WASP who is gentrifying the black neighborhood and that my father deserved to die because he was a minister and therefore contributed to the problem of the Christian Right(tm).
He was a raving lunatic who drew more emotion out of me than was healthy. However, he helped me sober up enough to get on the train and write the above screed on a little notepad.
I'm curious what my readers think. Please comment. I think this will be my entry for the RINO carnival this week.

Bombing in London
Tim Worstall, reporting from London is giving live updates on the bombings.
He quoted from the Guardian blog the following:
12:02 - Blair - "It's reasonably clear that there has been a series of terrorist attacks in London. It is my intention to leave the G8 to talk to police and emergency services personnel face to face... The G8 leaders will continue in my absence... Each of the countries around that table have some experience of terrorism... They all share our complete resolution for the defeat of terrorism. It is particularly barbaric that this has happened on the day people are meeting to try and help the problem of poverty in Africa... Just as it is reasonably clear that this is a terrorist attack... it is reasonably clear it has been timed to coincide with the opening of the G8... It is important, however, that the terrorists realise our determination to defend our values and our way of life is greater than their determination to cause the death and destruction of innocent people and impose their extremism on the world. It is our determination that they will never succeed in destroying what we have here in this country and in other civilised countries around the world."One of the first questions that came to mind is whether this is an Islamist attack or something having to do with G8.
In the end it doesn't matter. As of now, confirmed 33 dead, though the final count for at least one station is not completed.
My heart goes out to all those in the UK. The colours will remain at the top of this site for as long as I feel necessary, and rather than changing the background color back to red, it will stay black.
UPDATE: For the first time, I think, I disagree with Simon. He's getting snippy about Jeff and others declaring that "We are all Britons."
I think it's a good thing. Band together and destroy those who try to destroy us. If that means using phrases, then fine. When something on this scale happens, with the obvious focus of "kill the people who love freedom", then we are all the same.
If we're infidels, does that mean they're fidels? If they are, then when did they all become Castro?! (I'm sure that was uncalled for, but I needed to make fun of the disgusting creatures that did this.)
There were supposed to be two more bombs. Six bombs.
If London wasn't so prepared for an attack, and if Britons weren't so good at reacting to shit like this, it would have been so much worse than a few tens of people dead. It might have been a couple hundred dead. Or more.
I am wavering about blogathoning for the AICR. Maybe I should blog for an organization that is helping out with the cleanup and restoration. Or education of women in the Middle East. Or...
I just don't know.

Keeping with the theme of my recent discussions...
There's a woman who contacted Alex Koroknay-Palicz of NYRA today.
Her poem is dedicated to helping victims of molestation come forward.
Considering that I've been involved in several discussions about how child molesters and rapists should be "given a hot lead enema" to quote one person, then locked up and the key thrown away, this is very timely. She'll be added to my links, but here's her site:
A Rude (and long overdue) Awakening
Hopefully this draws some attention to her site. Perhaps I don't get a lot of traffic, but I'll gladly point anyone I can in her direction.
I'd like to see her write more about this situation, and what finally drove her to face it.

Antagonizing
Do people here think I'm antagonizing?
What would you do if antagonized by a poster on a message board?

Happy 4th!
FIREWORKS!
But why the fuck are they having Mariah Carey and Donald Trump? What happened to the fireworks of my childhood?
Now they start.
Boston maybe doesn't have as many, but I think they coordinate the fireworks better with the music. Maybe cause they're right over the POPS shell.

Weekend stuff
Is anyone going to be watching the fireworks tomorrow? I may or may not be watching them from the roof of a building on Orchard St, but if I don't, I'd be interested in watching them from another roof. I've done the Alphabet City thing, the Seaport thing, the Midtown thing...Looking for something new.

Maybe it's time for me to change my sig on message boards...
Got the below in the NYYRC weekly email.
Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and success of liberty.
--John F. KennedyTerrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shattered steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.

Holiday
It's a holiday weekend. Go enjoy the sun.
There's nothing to see here, and if there was, no one would say anything anyway.

Black
The sometime guest author on this blog, Sara, lost a very good friend of hers when his convoy was attacked in Iraq.
We are all in mourning for a wonderful man and brilliant father.
RIP.
