Pretty soon, that loverly NyQuil (tm) may not be your friend

Kate, I hope you feel better soon. However, that wonderful medicine you found will have to be confiscated.

Unless you'd be willing to show ID, that is.

The bill would require stores to sell Sudafed, Nyquil and other medicines only from behind the pharmacy counter.

Hmm...Don't really see anyone else blogging this right now, so I think I'll take advantage of my LGF-lanche to bring it to everyone's attention.

They didn't even bother to make it it's own bill. Just snuck it in.

Consumers would have to show a photo ID, sign a log, and be limited to 7.5 grams — or about 250 30-milligram pills — in a 30-day period. Computer tracking would prevent customers from exceeding the limit at other stores, according to the bipartisan bill.

The Senate voted by unanimous consent to add the anti-meth measure to the massive Commerce, Justice and Science appropriations bill, which is expected to pass the Senate next week.

Shit like this sickens me.

(sigh) This happened to me recently, on a business trip to Dallas. The State of Texas already has a law like this on the books.

Feeling congested, I went to a pharmacy to buy a box of Drixoral, my over-the-counter decongestant drug of choice.

My first clue: There weren't any actual boxes of decongestants on the shelves, just little slips of paper with a picture of the box of decongestants on it, with instructions to take one up to the counter and ask the pharmacist for some.

After waiting in line for ten minutes, I presented my little slip o' paper to the nice lady at the pharmacy counter, who explained that she needed to see a government-issued photo ID, needed my phone number, and needed me to sign a paper log-book.

Abandoning any veneer of Southern politeness, I locked eyes with her and said, in my best New York City growl, "You're putting me on."

Retaining her veneer of Texas politeness, she explained the recent change in Texas laws to me, and asked me whether I wanted to buy that box of dangerous meth-precursor decongestants, in which case I would need to make it snappy with the government-issued photo ID, etc...

Congratulations, politicians. This *perfectly* encapsulates the idiocy and futility of the War On (Some) Drugs... you create an enormous amount of bookkeeping overhead for legitimate business, you impede the flow of commerce and inconvenience ordinary citizens and legitimate purchasers, simply so you can LOOK LIKE YOU'RE DOING SOMETHING.

If the law is passed at a Federal level, I hope that New York City drug dealers start stocking decongestants. That way, all I'll need is a pager number--I won't have to stand in line with my driver's license in hand.

This is pretty stupid.

And when I say that, I mean this is stupid. Not that it is pretty, and that you are stupid. Just wanted to eleaborate. :)
