Parental Notification letter

TO: Concord Monitor editors
RE: The parental notification law

If NH wants to enact a parental notification law, make it equal and also enact a spousal notification law for those women over 18 seeking abortions. It makes about as much sense.

There is a serious problem in our society when we feel the only way to protect teenaged women is to force them to tell either their parents or a judge something that most adult women are embarassed by.

Placing a restriction on teenagers which is not also placed on adults not only puts an unfair burden on the teenager, but also can put them in direct danger. How many teens would rather die or hide their pregnancy to keep from having to make their situation public? How many abused kids and terrified girls are going to suffer as a result of this law? It's wonderful if the relationship exists where the teen can talk to her parents, but this is often not the case. This law is intended to do one thing - frighten already terrified girls. This isn't going to prevent them from having sex, nor is it going to better our society.

NH is the "Live Free or Die" state. I hate seeing it move away from that to a "Let the Government Intrude on Our Lives" state.

Now let's see if they publish it.

UPDATE: Yup. They published it on the 22nd.

Here's the URL, though they took out the best paragraph. It doesn't flow as smoothly now, and my best point was removed.

Ah well. I'm sure there will be plenty of opportunity to write more.

Baseball Statistics public domain or not?

According to CNN, MLB is trying to claim that the player statistics are their intellectual property.

Morons.

I hope they get their ass kicked in court. How in the name of all that is holy can they try this stunt?!

Via Slashdot.

Hosting Matters problems?

Um...is anyone else having trouble getting to Insta and other HM-hosted sites, or is it just me?

Their status page doesn't say anything, and the main site seems to be down. Technorati doesn't seem to have anything about it either.

Of course a Google search is useless. Always is when it comes to things like this.

UPDATE: Just went to the emergency forums. Here is what they say about it.

So why can't I get through to Insta still?

SECOND UPDATE: Ah. There we go. Weird how I could get through to my site, but not his.

Observation

Playing a government employee on 24 is like wearing the red shirt on Star Trek.

Complete Cosmos error

So as I'm watching the Science channel, a show comes on called "Complete Cosmos".

Ok, looks interesting. Aside from the common errors and stupid shit, the following happens...

"Saturn's atmosphere is made up of nitrogen, oxygen, and ME-thane."

Not methane, ME-thane. Emphasis on the first syllable, pronounced like "me".

WHAT THE FUCK?!

This was not a single error, nor was it me mishearing it. He said it twice more.

What kind of morons do they have doing commentary on the science channel?

I'm pissed

Wanna know why?

Here.

This week, the 7-year-old was beaten to death in a Brooklyn apartment where she had been tethered to a chair with twine.

I can't even describe how pissed off I am. No child should ever go through that hell. There's all this bullshit about how kids need to be protected. Lip service to the evils in the world. When push comes to shove, nothing happens. Business as usual. "Oh, we can't get in the house cause the parents, WHO ARE THE ONES ACCUSED OF ABUSE AND NEGLECT, won't let us in. Ah well, we'll just go on about our day."

Obviously her teachers noticed. Why didn't they do something more? Why didn't they continue to file reports? Her neighbors? Friends? Where was the world as this little girl was tortured to death?

She was seven.

Probably loved playing outside and going over to friends houses. I wonder what subject she liked in school...Math? Reading?

Second grade.

That's her life. Probably not even a blip on most people's radar. She didn't have a chance to become the person she wanted to be.

And what kind of people are her siblings? All five of them stood by while their parents tied her to a chair, molested her, and then beat her to death. All it took was one well-placed blow to the head. At 36lbs, she couldn't fight back, and she couldn't survive. And no one else fought for her.

THIS is why I want to be a teacher. I want to be there for the kids who don't have anyone. I want to be the one they can turn to. I want to help them grow into the people they want to be. I want to keep another Nixzmary Brown from dying.

Hi there

Ok. So if you haven't heard from me in a long time, it has nothing to do with you. I'm extremely busy right now. Two jobs, preparing for college, and dealing with financial issues have really screwed with me lately. So I have a lot to say, and no time to say it in.

Do me a favor? I'm going to put both paypal and amazon buttons up. I tried to keep this site ad-free and begging-free, but my situation is changing with school, and I really could use some help. If you want to do something simple, just click through the ad(s) on the side (Adsense is screwing with me, and it's just a charity ad right now) or hit up the paypal/amazon buttons when you have a chance.

Thanks.

Postal rate update

Someone remind me tomorrow to post about my experience with the asshats at the post office.

I'm really pissed at them. They deserve to collapse under the weight of their own bureaucracy.

Postal rate increase

Stock up on those 2c stamps. The postal rate goes up to 39c on Jan. 8th. Sunday.

Anyone else know about this? The first I heard of it was a few minutes ago as I was ordering stamps online. Did a google search, and an MSNBC article, Baltimore Sun article, and Kansas City Star one were the only news bits that popped up.

Fox and NYTimes aren't even on the first google search page. MSNBC and CNN seem to have buried it under the "OMG! Iraq bombing!" headlines.

We all knew it had to happen someday

My prayers go out to Sharon and his family. Although he may not be able to return to power, perhaps he can be comfortable for his remaining days.

You know it's love when...

They're both curled up on your feet and you can't move.

Not that you'd want to.

They are warm and fuzzy, after all.
