Local strays
My neighborhood, having many empty lots and buildings, is a haven for stray cats. Not all of them are feral, some are dumped, and others have homes, but their people aren't very good to them, and they wander the streets.
The other night, coming home from class, I saw a tortie I hadn't encountered before. Although possibly pregnant, with a round belly, she seemed well-fed and happy, as well as being very friendly, miauwing at me and bullying my hand into petting her. Since it was raining, she was damp, but didn't seem all that uncomfortable. Every time I took a step, she would follow me, rubbing against my leg and demanding attention. I crouched down and skritched behind her ears a bit, eliciting a sweet purr and more vehement miauws.
We continued on for a few feet, approaching my building and enjoying each other's company. She didn't seem all that hungry, just wanting attention. As we arrived at my building, I started to wonder what my own kittens would think when they smelled her on me, as well as how I was going to get up into the building without her following me. She hopped up a couple steps behind me, calling insistantly and wondering where I was going and looking at me with curiosity. She had her head tilted in that friendly kitty way, which seems to say "hey, wait, I wasn't done with you, where are you going? Pay more attention to me!"
All the while, my brain was swirling, trying to figure out how to slip in the door, since although she was breaking my heart and I wanted to bring her in with me, I wasn't about to expose my girls to anything she might be carrying, and I couldn't isolate her easily. She sat down on the one dry spot, continuing to look at me and ask what I was doing. Tears filling my eyes, I put the key in the lock and slipped in my front door, closing it on her questions and demands.
The last I saw of her, she was staring at me through the wrought-iron covered window, expecting me to come back out and play with her. I assume she has a home, since that was the first and last I've seen of her, but I'm probably deluding myself. All I can do is hope she has someone caring for her and giving her the love she enjoys so much.

I'm a baaaaaad kitty mommy
I left the kitties at the vet today to be spayed. I know it's necessary, and that in the end they'll thank me, but I felt so bad leaving them there. They were both giving me the evil eye and Sarai was miauwing her little lungs out. That cat has a voice on her.
Oh the poor kitties.
Good news is that the surgery is done, everything went routinely, and I pick them up tomorrow. I still feel bad for putting them through that though.
I'm gonna miss them tonight.

Pauvre chat
My poor kitty...Sarai seems to have picked up an eye infection. I have a call into the vet to find out when he can see her.
It started on Saturday. She was listless and seemed to have trouble opening her left eye. By that afternoon she was better, had more energy, but still had problems with the eye. Sunday she was normal in the morning (serenading us at 6am and then running around like a bat out of hell for a good portion of the day) before crashing around 3:30 when I left for work. Her left eye was cloudy and bloodshot, and the pupil looked blown. The vet's office put me on hold for a while and then closed at two, so no luck there.
Monday morning she was almost normal. The eye was cloudy and a bit bloodshot, but she didn't seem to be bothered by it.
Tuesday, it started all over again with the other eye. I would assume conjunctivitis, but there's no goop coming out of it and she's eating normally. They have to be spayed anyway, so I'll set up the appointment for this weekend and let the vet see her then.
She actually sought me out for cuddling last night. She was shivering a bit, but didn't seem feverish and actually fought her way out from under the blanket while I was falling asleep. This morning, same routine. Meow miaou miauw...burble, purr, ask for attention.
Why isn't the vet calling me back? I have to call again.
It hurts me to see her so listless.

Haven't we been over this before?
You don't bite the mommy.
Seriously.
Mommy's fingers are NOT for biting. Rubbing against? Sure. Playing with? Only when they're under the blanket. Biting?
NO.
Bad kitty.
(as Sarai runs around and acts like a total nutjob)
The Boy thinks we have a ghost cat. He was in the kitchen and thought he saw Sarai sitting in the living room window. He said "hi", and then went back into the bedroom. Both the cats were in the bedroom, asleep.
Interesting.
Explains the kitty insanity.

By the way, both the kittens adored the Puppy Bowl.
They were less impressed by the Bissel Halftime Show.
Odd.

They're both curled up on your feet and you can't move.
Not that you'd want to.
They are warm and fuzzy, after all.

An open letter to mommy
Mommy, you know we love you.
But please. We're trying to sleep. This means
- Don't rub your face all over us. We are not washcloths.
- Don't give us belly rubs. We are not magic lamps. No genies here.
- It's OUR bed, don't move us. We chose our spots carefully, and we don't want to move.
- Don't move. You're there to be part of the bed, and we need you to stay.
So, got it? Those are some of the rules. At least when it comes to sleep. There are still fifty billion more, but we'll get to them.
And that's not including the food rules. We'll get to those, too.

Mommy fed us late this morning. I don't know why, I was being sooooooooooooooooooo good! I didn't sing outside her bedroom door at four am, that wasn't my music playing at six thirty, and I sat and waited patiently for her to come feed us.
Not even the Boy came out to feed us.

Kitten follies
My girls are being hilarious.
I have these windows in the bedroom. They aren't normal double-hung windows, they're part of an overall window setup that takes up most of the wall.
I love these windows, except that I can't fit an A/C in them.
So. The bottom half of the windows have screens...\ack...kitten...no...not keyboard...HEY! Stop chewing on my monitor!
Ok. Where was I...right. Windows.
So the bottom half have screens. The top half doesn't. The top half remains closed mst of the time, except when it's fuck-all hot inside and I open them to get more air in.
Then I forget to close them.
Oh, look, flies. Half a dozen of them. How fun. At least the girls think so. They've been running around like their butts are on fire, trying to catch these things. After proving their skills on the mouse the other day (thank god the boy found it before I did - All these years of having cats, and I'm still not inured to the sight of a dead rodent. Guts? Fine. Pieces? No problem. An entire mouse? Ew.) one would think they wouldn't have a problem, now wouldn't one?
No dice. They can't catch a single one. Not for lack of trying, but it's starting to get hilarious. Jumping up in the air, rocket-butting around the apartment, and making fools of themselves. I've been laughing my ass off for the last couple days now.
Oh, look. They caught one. See what teamwork does, girls?

Klutzy Kitten
I'm sitting here, unable to sleep, and listening to Sarai (at least I think it's Sarai) run up and down the hallway, only to bang into the bedroom door at the last second because she can't stop.
God, what my neighbors must think of her...and me.
(Yes, my bedroom door is closed and I'm inside. She and Athena tend to get very loud at night and it's the only way I can get any sleep sometimes.)
Oh, and they both have Catster pages.
The Boy took the photos.
Whoops, have to go rescue a jingly ball and give it back to her. Escaped under the door.

Purry Puddles of Kitten
Breakthrough!
Popped open a can of food for the girls this morning. They came over and started winding around my ankles.
I was able to pick up the tortie (yes, I know they don't have names yet. Bear with me) and she curled up under my chin and PURRED!!!!
Ladies and gentlemen, we have purrs. This is great.
I haven't been able to stop smiling all day. She's getting really cuddly and friendly, and will actively come to me if I hold out my hand for her to sniff.
Her sister, on the other hand, is still fairly standoffish. She'll come around, but it's definitely going to take time for her to feel safe. It's a wait and see situation.
But purry kitten! Yay!

First Night
Well, after their first night in their new home, the kitties are doing nicely. They're still holed up under the couch, but last night they came out to play quite a bit.
They're so tiny. It amazes me that such beautiful little creatures are deigning to share it's space with me.
8 weeks old. That's all they are. Babies. And I'm trying so hard to make them comfortable. I settle myself on the floor, with my laptop, and work from there. So far, the tortie will let me pick her up and cuddle her for a few moments, though she doesn't actively seek me out. Her sister is still pretty skittish, and it will take time to win her over, but when she is...She'll be loyal and friendly. Just like my Puddy.
I'm still bouncing around names. I've considered naming the tortie Nefreet, in honor of Christy Marx's recently departed moggy. Since the ginger has such a little voice on her, perhaps Siryn or something of that sort (Siren? Don't know if I like that spelling) would work well.
Back to work. I have a hair appt today at 3, we'll see if I am getting the Liscio or if my hair is too messed up for that.

More Kittens!
She really is a little queen. I'm thinking I need an appropriate mischevious goddess name for her. Something Egyptian or Celtic.
I'm so glad to see this one play, even if I'm not part of it.
Yes, that's under my couch (I know I need to dust under there, you don't have to tell me). They've made themselves very happy under there. It's the perfect height for them. They're Cave Kittens!
Which reminds me, I got my package from Laurence for sponsoring him in the Blogathon (I ended up giving 50 bucks instead of the 25 I had pledged) and the photos of Edloe are just waiting for an appropriate frame to come my way. I'm very picky about frames.

Incoming!
Hello, world...
Neither one is named yet, I'm not sure what to name them.
Photos taken by Jason, as I was busy trying to get them to say hello to the world.
Tortie girl. She's gonna be a big one. Friendly, curious, playful, and a total lap cat. I think she has some Maine Coon in her, based on the ear tufts and facial shape.
Ginger and white tabby. She's a bit more skittish, but a thorough beauty. Skinny and little, I think she'll be more like my Puddy Tat. She was the first to leave their crate, but now she's mostly holed up under the couch. She'll be ok. I'm sitting on the floor so they get used to me.
The tortiegirl slept for a while. I think the cab ride wore her out. I really need to get names for them.
Meanwhile, her sister looked around.
Finally, after some play with a mousie on a string, this one popped out, looked around for her sister, found her, and went after her.
Last one for today. They're really cute.
I mean really cute.
They'll tear up my home, my heart, and my skin in no time at all.
*sigh*

Sadness never seems to end, does it...
Especially when it comes to cats.
Michele found out today that her new kitten (such a cutie) tested positive for FeLV, which is hopefully a false positive or is something that won't impact her too soon.
She can use all the info and support she can get, so head over there and give her good mojo (but leave the jojo out, that can make things a bit icky).
A woman I haven't mentioned here, but who I've been reading since I was introduced to her Silly Sleeping Olympics, Christy Marx, just lost one of her Horde. They're all special, and all have a place in her heart and home, but this one seems to be her true heartmate. She also needs love and support, especially since it was so unexpected and sudden.
I'm still on a kitten hunt, so if any of you readers know of a pair of kittens (tabby, ginger, grey, not tuxedo, calico or tortie), either related or very good friends, in the NYC area (within mass transport range) and at least one of them is female, then let me know. I'm ready to take them Monday or later.

Cats
If anyone in the NYC area has kittens who will be ready for adoption in September, let me know. I'll be ready for them then.
- Must be a pair
- Preferably one male, one female
- Preferably siblings
- No older than 10-12 weeks at time of adoption
- No calicos
- Must be shorthaired
- Must be playful and friendly
- Must be up-to-date on all their shots
That's all I can think of right now...I'll add more as I think of it.
Oh, and if anyone knows a good vet in the city (not too expensive) I'd be much obliged.

Update on Kittycat
I wrote, almost a week ago about a cat who lived down the street from me. I haven't seen her since last Friday, and I'm a bit worried. I really wanted to help her.
But all is not lost. I am still planning to start volunteering for KittyKind, an organization that works out of the Union Square Petco. Hopefully I find a cat or a pair of kittens there.
In the meantime, I'm looking for a job as a waitress or hostess at a nice restaurant downtown. I'm working on my C.V. as I type this, and have a few places in mind. If anyone has suggestions, leave them in the comments.
Speaking of comments, where is everyone? I broke 100 visitors in 24 hrs yesterday. But no one has commented. Come on people, where are you?
If I'm being boring, tell me. Ask me to write about things. Ask me questions. I'm having a hard time coming up with original content, because I'm not willing to write about certain things in my personal life. That might be stupid, since I've written about the house I grew up in, I've commented on blogs that relate to my hometown, and I'm pretty sure that if anyone is going to find me, they'll do so easily.
In the meantime, COMMENT. That's an order.

Abandoned Kittycat
There's this beautiful tiny tabby who lives down the street from me.
She wants to be living indoors, but there's a snag in that plan. Her owner moved away and abandoned her. She is so friendly, she just has to see me coming down the street and she dashes over to greet me. She has a sweet little meow and rumbly purr, and loves to just get all kinds of skritches. I don't understand how someone could just go away and leave this darling to the whims of the neighborhood.
My downstairs neighbors, M. and W., have been feeding her. I'm helping out. What I'd like to do is actually adopt her, but she needs to be spayed, vaccinated, and tested before I can do so. I don't have the funds for that kind of vet work.
Here's where my readers come in...if there are any...
Help me. If you know of an organization that will do this for me, in return for volunteer work (I've contacted KittyKind, but I don't know if they have the wherewithall for this if they aren't getting an adoption fee), tell me. If you can donate a few bucks, email me and I'll give you the information. She seems healthy, I don't think she even has fleas.
This little girl is such an amazing cat, it breaks my heart to see her dumped like this. Please, I'm resorting to cyberbegging here, help her.
She had a litter a couple of months ago, all the kittens are adopted out. The father was living in the same apartment, but he spent a lot of time outside and ended up getting hit by a car. She is smart, always just hangs out right in front of her old building, rarely goes under parked cars and never into the street. She's lucky this is a safe residential block with a lot of caring people. But she needs a home. She is fundamentally an indoor kitty and needs the security.
I estimate she's only a couple of years old, probably just out of kittenhood herself, and at this point weighs maybe 6 or 7 pounds.
I'll post a photo as soon as I can get a good one.

Still waiting on the photo (she seems to be hiding at the moment) but go check out the other beautiful kitties at The Modulator's Friday Ark.

In Memorium
This site, today, is dedicated to the memory of my Cat. She was 14 and beautiful. Life is too short.
Assume the Meatloaf Position!
Oops. Sorry Mistress. Allow me to refresh the catnip in your cushion?
But yes. My Puddy Tat. She died a year ago this past March, after 14 years of mouse-catching, catnip-loving fun. She was a Cat in the truest sense of the word. But she was MINE. And I was HERS. And we were happy.
And I miss her deeply.

Is a child in a box the same thing as a cat-in-a-box?
I'm babysitting at the moment. Only reason I was up so hellishly early this morning, managing to be drunk and hung over at the same time. Quite the accomplishment.
One of the children is in the baby swing. She is a baby. This makes sense. She is enjoying herself.
The other one is sitting curled up in a box. This is odd.
Especially to my poor damaged brain.
I will have just enough time to recover before the cinco de mayo celebration tonight.
LATER: I have a photo of the box, sans child. I shall post it later.
Photos of real people will probably not go up on this site without heavy editing or written permission.
